INSPIRATION

Living on the Yorkshire coast with its craggy cliffs and smugglers caves provides a natural source of inspiration. Exploring the random beauty of nature with its intricate and irregular forms is like a treasure hunt.

Tracing the delicate edge of a shell, studying interesting rock forms or watching the way seaweed floats in the water, whilst walking along the shoreline, might lead to a drawing or idea that becomes translated into jewellery. Or capturing the ephemeral light effects on the ever-changing tides through a camera lens.

I like to think the unconscious influence of the natural environment plays an integral role in the craft process. Some intuitively created textures hammered onto metal, for example, remind me of sun glitter and the way it reflects on the surface of the water. Whilst more sculptural forms are reminiscent of ripples and undulating wave forms.

Feeling connected to the forces and fragility of nature, not just observing is important to me. To be immersed in the elements is both exhilarating and calming. Being blown about by the wind or thrown about by the waves, or just floating with the seaweed heightens the senses and revitalises the spirit!

The sea evokes imagery of mysterious watery worlds inhabited by coral forms and otherworldly creatures. Working with gemstones and baroque pearls are a special part of this organic fusion with an iridescent, imaginary world.
